Navigating Christmas with IBD: Tips for Families

The festive season can be full of excitement — but if your child has Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), it can also bring a few extra challenges. Between the changes in routine, special food, and busy social plans, it’s completely understandable that things can start to feel a little tricky at times.

Here are a few tips to help make the Christmas period easier for children (and families) living with IBD:

Food & Festivities

Christmas food is a big part of the fun, but not every meal will suit every tummy.

  • Plan ahead and bring along foods your child enjoys and tolerates.
  • Let them help choose or prepare their own special treats so they feel included.
  • Remember: Christmas isn’t just about food — focus on the games, lights, and laughter too!

Routines & Rest

Late nights, excitement, and travel can upset routines.

  • Keep medication and feeds on schedule — alarms or a simple checklist can help.
  • Make sure you’ve got enough medication and supplies before the holidays begin.
  • Build in quiet time so your child can rest and recharge.

Feelings & Flexibility

IBD can make children feel left out or frustrated, especially when they can’t join in everything.

  • Encourage them to share how they’re feeling.
  • It’s okay to change plans or skip events if they’re tired or having a flare.
  • Keep things flexible and focus on what really matters — time together.

Family & Friends

If you’re visiting others, let hosts know about your child’s needs — whether that’s easy bathroom access, dietary restrictions, or just some downtime between activities.

Every family’s Christmas looks different, and that’s okay. The best gift you can give is a calm, comfortable, and joyful time together — no matter what’s on the menu or under the tree.
